Seeking discipline, Bucs pick Schiano

MBRAP

Though the Cleveland Plain Dealer still has not acknowledged the move on its website (other than to finally remove his name and face from the roster), Tony Grossi no longer covers the Browns as a beat writer, following the accidental publication of a private Twitter message that called Browns owner Randy Lerner? (pictured) ?pathetic? and an ?irrelevant billionaire.?

Browns spokesman Neal Gulkis tells PFT that the Browns have no comment on the situation.

There?s still no evidence that the Browns pressured the Plain Dealer to make the move.? Per a source with knowledge of the situation, however, both Lerner and president Mike Holmgren refused to accept calls from Grossi after the message was posted and deleted.? We?re also told that a meeting occurred Wednesday between Plain Dealer publisher Terry Eggar and Holmgren.

The Plain Dealer has been nearly as silent as the Browns.? Managing editor Thom Fladung called the Kiley & Booms radio show on 92.3 The Fan this morning to explain the decision, and Fladung?s explanation was less than persuasive, in our opinion.

The decision to remove Grossi from the beat was driven by this ?determining factor? articulated by Fladung:? ?Don?t do something that affects your value as a journalist or the value of your newspaper or affects the perception of your value and the perception of that newspaper?s value.?

That?s a pretty broad ? and vague ? rule.? And that?s the kind of standard that gives a news organization the ability to do pretty much whatever it wants whenever it wants, because there?s pretty much always something to which someone can point as proof of ?something that affects your value as a journalist or the value of your newspaper or affects the perception of your value and the perception of that newspaper?s value.?

Making Fladung?s ?determining factor? even more confusing is the fact that he admitted that Grossi could have deliberately expressed a strong opinion about Lerner in a column published and printed in the Plain Dealer without conseqeuence.? ?Let?s say Tony had written that Randy Lerner?s lack of involvement with the Browns and their resulting disappointing records over the years has made him irrelevant as an owner, that?s defensible,? Fladung said.? ?That?s absolutely defensible.?

What?s indefensible is the failure of the Plain Dealer to acknowledge the fact that Grossi never intended to make the statements available for public view.? He fell victim to the subtle but significant differences between a ?direct message? (which is private) and a ?reply? (which is public) on Twitter.? It was an accident.? A mistake.

Let?s go back to the days of typewriters and shorthand, and let?s say that Grossi?s editor has two boxes on his desk.? One is for article submissions and one is for proposed topics.? And let?s say that Grossi scribbled out a scathing column about Lerner as a proposed topic, but Grossi accidentally put it in the box of actual submissions for print.

That?s the low-tech version of what happened here.? Grossi accidentally put his message in the wrong box.

So when Fladung says he ?felt very strongly? that the Twitter message ?was inappropriate and unprofessional and . . . it?s not the kind of opinion a journalist covering a beat can express,? Fladung presumes that Grossi actually intended to articulate that opinion to the world.? He didn?t.? It was inadvertently blurted out, like a temporary case of Twitter Tourette?s.

Some have suggested that the Twitter blunder provided the Plain Dealer with a vehicle for addressing pre-existing concerns regarding Grossi?s overall job performance.? Undercutting that theory was Fladung?s assertion during the radio interview that Grossi is a ?very good? and ?very successful? beat writer.

I?m continuing to write about this because it?s the kind of mistake that could happen to anyone, and everyone should be entitled to the benefit of the doubt in a case like this, especially when newspapers and other media companies want their writers to engage with the audience through various new technologies and platforms.? It also just ?feels? like an unjust result, whether because the Plain Dealer is being obtuse or because the Plain Dealer is cowering to the Browns or because the Browns are remaining deliberately silent in order to secure the preferred outcome of having Grossi removed from the beat.

Regardless, we?re disappointed in the Plain Dealer, in Fladung, in the Browns, in Lerner, and in Holmgren.? And we hope that one or more of them will snap out of it and do the right thing, or at least let the rest of us know in far more convincing fashion why they believe the right thing was done.

Fifth Megaupload Arrest; No Bail for Kim Dotcom (Mashable)

Authorities appear to be giving no quarter in their case against file-sharing website Megaupload. A New Zealand judge denied bail to the website's founder, Kim Dotcom, on Wednesday. Authorities in the Netherlands also arrested a fifth suspect in the case.

Multiple news reports have identified the latest arrestee as programmer Andrus Nomm, a 32-year-old Estonian citizen.

The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) last week charged Dotcom and six others with running Megaupload as a "massive worldwide online piracy" operation. American authorities have been able to lead the charge because Megaupload was run in part from servers in the United States. The DOJ accuses Megaupload's operators of enabling the illegal downloads of millions of films, music, TV shows, software and other content to earn more than $175 million for themselves while costing more than $500 million in damages to copyright holders.

The first wave of arrests of Dotcom and three other alleged accomplices came last week, days after major websites including Wikipedia and Google blacked-out all or parts of their content in protest of the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA). Soon after the arrests, the hacker group Anonymous claimed credit for attacks that temporarily disabled the DOJ website.

Dotcom was denied bail on Wednesday pending his first extradition hearing on Feb. 22 because he is believed to pose a flight risk. Prosecutors said that has access to large monetary funds and a history of avoiding criminal charges.

Dotcom was arrested after authorities forced him out of a safe-room in his New Zealand mansion.

Born in Germany as Kim Schmitz, Dotcom has led an extravagant life as an Internet rogue, according to widespread news reports.

He was accused of a major insider-trading case in Germany at the peak of the Internet boom in 2001. He fled the country but was arrested in Thailand, then extradited and convicted in Germany, where he spent five months in jail after appearing on a popular late-night talk show to publicly defend himself, according to The New York Times.

Multiple photos posted online show him with beautiful women, jetliners and fancy automobiles while decked out in his trademark sunglasses and black garb. He flew helicopters and paid for the city of Aukland's 2010 New Year's fireworks celebration, according to the Wall Street Journal. Authorities reportedly seized more than a dozen luxury cars when they arrested him last week.

What do you think? Is Kim Dotcom up the creek without a paddle? Or can he wiggle out of this? Let us know in the comments.

Canonical bringing HUD to Ubuntu 12.04, company's assault on menus continues

Canonical bringing HUD interface to Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, company's assault on contextual menus continues
Canonical -- shepherd of the popular Linux distribution Ubuntu -- generally doesn't rock the boat with its LTS releases, but things are going to be different this time around. With 12.04LTS the company is taking its assault on contextual menus to the next level by launching HUD. Mark Shuttleworth's obsession with simplifying user interactions began with the controversial Unity UI in Ubuntu 10.10, and will continue with the Head-Up Display. "Menus require you to read a lot when you probably already know what you want," the distro's founder wrote, "HUD solves many of these issues." Those that have used the search feature in Apple's "Help" menus, or launcher apps like Quicksilver and Alfred, will immediately recognize the goal -- to keep a user's fingers on the keyboard, remove clutter and facilitate quick access to available actions. Listening to music and in the mood for The King? Invoke HUD, type the artist's name and you're presented with your Elvis catalog. It also uses "fuzzy matching" and will remember the actions you most commonly perform to further refine your experience. If you're having a hard time envisioning how HUD works, fear not; there is a three minute video demo awaiting your inspection after the break. Death to menus!

Native dog breeds risk extinction

Native dog breeds such as the English setter are being pushed towards extinction by the growing popularity of more exotic dogs such as huskies and Chihuahuas, new figures suggest.

The setter has appeared for the first time on the UK Kennel Club's list of vulnerable breeds.

Figures show a two thirds drop in puppy registrations in the last decade.

The Chihuahua, popularised by celebrity owners like Paris Hilton, saw a 25% increase in registrations last year.

Caroline Kisko, secretary of the Kennel Club said: "Celebrities, popular culture and fashion play a big part in today's society and unfortunately, dogs are not immune from our fickle tastes.

"The latest victim is the English setter, a wonderful and loyal breed, while the number of Siberian huskies has more than trebled in this country in the last 10 years."

Fran Grimsdell from Norfolk, who breeds English setters, told BBC News: "The thing that saddens me is that we're getting people buying puppies, but they're nearly all people who have already owned English setters.

"In the last two or three litters we've had - I've probably only sold one puppy out of about 15 to people who have never had the breed before.

"English setters have got a fantastic nature... I would say that they are sensitive, terribly affectionate, loyal and wonderfully elegant in appearance. They are good with children. They can be a bit wilful... but I love that."

One of the country's oldest breeds, the setter's history stretches back hundreds of years to dogs used for hunting upland game birds. The medium-sized breed - with its characteristic flecked coat - is regarded as a good family pet, but also requires a large home and lots of exercise.

With 234 registrations last year, the setter joins 24 other dogs considered to be at risk of extinction on the club's list of Native Vulnerable Breeds. Breeds are added to the list when puppy registrations drop below 300 in a year.

In 2011, some 3,000 dogs were registered across the 25 vulnerable breeds. Chihuahuas, meanwhile, saw more than 6,000 registrations.

Vulnerable native breeds in 2011

  • Otterhound: 38 registrations; down 33%*
  • Skye terrier: 44 registrations; up 19%
  • Field spaniel: 46 registrations; down 16%
  • Sussex spaniel: 52 registrations; down 23%
  • Curly coated retriever: 62 registrations; down 14%
  • Sealyham terrier: 63 registrations; up 29%
  • Glen of Imaal terrier: 67 registrations; up 10%
  • Smooth collie: 75 registrations; up 39%
  • English toy terrier (Black): 95 registrations; down 30%
  • Dandie Dinmont terrier: 98 registrations; down 38%
  • Lancashire heeler: 98 registrations; down 26%

*Percentage change on 2010

The most endangered breed of all is the otterhound, a large rough-coated dog with a loud, baying call. There were just 38 otterhound registrations last year (a decline of 33% on 2010).

Pam Marston-Pollock, chair of the UK Otterhound Club, said there were now just three breeders in the UK. An estimated 600 of the dogs remain worldwide, but only a fraction of these are suitable for breeding.

"As far as the show world is concerned, we don't have many younger people [involved with] the breed. The established breeders who have been around for 30 years are either dying off or aren't keeping as many hounds," Ms Marston-Pollock told BBC News.

"It's a sign of the times generally that keeping substantially sized hounds is quite expensive."

She added: "We're obviously conscious that we've got a narrow gene pool... we've had a meeting to discuss the possibility of bringing in an outcross with [another breed] to broaden our gene pool."

Canine conundrum

  • Do you know your British dogs from exotic alternatives?
  • Test your knowledge in The Magazine's quiz

Such approaches have been successful in the case of Dalmatians, which can be prone to kidney or bladder stones. By outbreeding with a German pointer, one Dalmatian breeder was able to remove the trait responsible.

Other vulnerable native dogs include the Dandie Dinmont terrier (98 registrations, down 35% on 2010) and the Skye terrier (44 registrations in 2011, up 19% on the previous year). The Skye terrier was immortalised in the story of Greyfriars Bobby, the 19th Century Edinburgh dog that guarded the grave of its former owner for 14 years.

Breeders say parts of the country's heritage will be lost if native breeds are left to die out.

Ms Kisko said the needs of exotic breeds were poorly understood by many owners. As a result, she said, the Kennel Club had seen an increase in the number of exotic dogs coming in to breed rescue societies when owners realise they are unable to give them the exercise, grooming or other care that they need.

One example is the Afghan hound, which requires about two hours exercise per day and daily grooming. In 2009-2010, 43% of all Afghan hounds registered with the Kennel Club ended up in breed rescue centres.

Why native dog breeds such as the English setter are being pushed towards extinction

The impact of celebrity may have had a positive effect on at least one native vulnerable breed, the Cardigan Welsh corgi. Registrations shot up by 134% in 2011. This has been put down to the "Royal Wedding effect" and the breed's close relationship with the Pembroke Welsh corgi, owned by the Queen.

Harvey Locke, a former president of the British Veterinary Association (BVA) told BBC News: "There are more than 200 pedigree dogs... we want to do everything we can to encourage responsible dog breeding.

"We are obviously against unscrupulous ones who breed [only] for profit. Everybody suffers there: the people who buy the puppies suffer and the dogs suffer.

He urged some breeders to move away from selecting for extreme features and called on prospective dog owners to seek advice from veterinary surgeons.

Administration nominees awaiting next move by GOP (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Senate Republicans are returning to Washington in an angry mood over President Barack Obama's appointments to two key agencies during a year-end break.

More than 70 nominees to judgeships and senior federal agency positions are awaiting the next move from Republicans, who can use Senate rules to block votes on some or all of Obama's picks.

While Republicans return Monday to discuss their next step, recess appointee Richard Cordray is running a new Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, and the National Labor Relations Board ? with three temporary members ? is now at full strength with a Democratic majority.

Obama left more than 70 other nominees in limbo, well aware that Republicans could use Senate rules to block them.

The White House justified the appointments on grounds that Republicans were holding up the nominations to paralyze the two agencies. The consumer protection agency was established under the 2010 Wall Street reform law, which requires the bureau to have a director in order to begin policing financial products such as mortgages, checking accounts, credit cards and payday loans.

The Supreme Court has ruled that the five-member NLRB must have a three-member quorum to issue regulations or decide major cases in union-employer disputes.

Several agencies contacted by The Associated Press, including banking regulators, said they were conducting their normal business despite vacancies at the top. In some cases, nominees are serving in acting capacities.

At full strength, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. has five board members. The regulation of failed banks "is unaffected," said spokesman Andrew Gray. "The three-member board has been able to make decisions without a problem." Cordray's appointment gives it a fourth member.

The Comptroller of the Currency, run by an acting chief, has kept up its regular examinations of banks. The Federal Trade Commission, operating with four board members instead of five, has had no difficulties. "This agency is not a partisan combat agency," said spokesman Peter Kaplan. "Almost all the votes are unanimous and consensus-driven."

Republicans have pledged retaliation for Obama's recess appointments, but haven't indicated what it might be.

"The Senate will need to take action to check and balance President Obama's blatant attempt to circumvent the Senate and the Constitution, a claim of presidential power that the Bush administration refused to make," said Sen. Charles Grassley, an Iowa Republican who is his party's top member on the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Grassley wouldn't go further, and Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky hasn't tipped his hand after charging that Obama had "arrogantly circumvented the American people." Before the Senate left for its break in December, McConnell blocked Senate approval of more than 60 pending nominees because Obama wouldn't commit to making no recess appointments.

Republicans have to consider whether their actions, especially any decision to block all nominees, might play into Obama's hands.

Obama has adopted an election-year theme of "we can't wait" for Republicans to act on nominations and major proposals like his latest jobs plan. Republicans have to consider how their argument that the president is violating Constitutional checks and balances plays against Obama's stump speeches characterizing them as obstructionists.

Senate historian Donald Ritchie said the minority party has retaliated in the past for recess appointments by holding up specific nominees. "I'm not aware of any situations where no nominations were accepted," he said. The normal practice is for the two party leaders to negotiate which nominations get votes.

During the break, Republicans forced the Senate to convene for usually less than a minute once every few days to argue that there was no recess and that Obama therefore couldn't bypass the Senate's authority to confirm top officials. The administration said this was a sham, and has released a Justice Department opinion backing up the legality of the appointments.

Obama considers the new Consumer Financial Protection Bureau a signature achievement of his first term. Republicans have been vehemently opposed to the bureau's setup. They argued the agency needed a bipartisan board instead of a director and should have to justify its budget to Congress instead of drawing its funding from the independent Federal Reserve.

Cordray is expected to get several sharp questions from Republicans when he testifies Tuesday before a House Oversight and Government Reform panel.

The NLRB has been a target of Republicans and business groups. Last year, the agency accused Boeing of illegally retaliating against union workers who had struck its plants in Washington state by opening a new production line at its non-union plant in South Carolina. Boeing denied the charge and the case has since been settled, but Republican anger over it and a string of union-friendly decisions from the board last year hasn't abated.

Croatia votes to join EU, but with great ambivalence (The Christian Science Monitor)

Belgrade, Serbia ? Croatia voted in favor of European Union membership in Sunday?s referendum, showing that for most Croats, membership in the economically troubled union still offers hope of economic and political progress for the Balkan nation.

With almost all the ballots counted, the electoral commission announced that 67 percent had voted in favor of joining the bloc, with about 33 percent against. The result confounded recent surveys suggesting that the referendum would be very close. But an approximate turnout of 45 percent suggests that only three in ten Croatian voters are enthusiastic enough about EU membership to have gone to the polling stations to express their support.

On the eve of the referendum, an anti-EU demonstration in Zagreb attended by activists including war veterans turned violent, as demonstrators clashed with police, leading to several arrests.

Croatia is now expected to join the EU on July 1, 2013, subject to the approval of all existing member states.

RELATED: Think you know Europe? Take our geography quiz.

Most of Croatia?s political class and the mainstream parties have strongly backed membership, which President Ivo Josipovic has called ?a turning point in our history.? Accession is expected to bring a range of benefits, including increased access to generous EU funding and improved freedom of movement and employment opportunities for Croatians within and beyond the member states.

Prior to the referendum, campaigners in favor of EU membership argued that a "no" vote would cost Croatia some ?1.8 billion ($2.3 billion) in EU funding over the next three years ? cash that the country sorely needs to revive its economy, flagging like much of the EU.

Accession is also of great symbolic importance to Croatia, bringing to a close its painful post-Communist era, during which it suffered economic collapse, fought a bloody war for independence from Yugoslavia, and became embroiled in the Bosnian conflict.

Croatia is only the second former Yugoslav state to join the EU, after Slovenia, which joined in 2004. Slovenia and Croatia were the two most affluent nations in Yugoslavia, but the former only suffered a brief ten-day war of independence in 1992.

While Croatia prepares to join the EU club of liberal democratic nations, most of its neighbors remain stuck in the slow lane towards membership. In December, EU members voted against starting accession talks with Serbia, which now looks unlikely to join this decade. Bosnia, hopelessly politically divided, is even further from membership, as is Albania. Even tiny Montenegro, a relative success story, is several years from joining.

Given the practical and symbolic benefits of entry to the EU, Croats' lack of enthusiasm for membership ? and the existence of a sizable, vocal minority that is vehemently opposed ? may seem strange.

One reason is the political and economic malaise afflicting the EU and the euro. Many Croats feel uncertain about the EU?s direction and its future. Accession will put Croatia on track to adopt the troubled euro, although not until 2015 or later.

However, some of the most ardent opposition is unrelated to the EU?s present funk. Nationalists, some of them veterans who fought for independence, fear a loss of sovereignty and identity. Fishermen are concerned about opening Croatia?s waters to Italian competitors and small business owners worry about greater regulation from Brussels.

The experience of other post-Communist EU member states, such as Romania, Bulgaria, and Hungary has not been entirely positive. The three have clashed with Brussels over economic policy, reform, and corruption. Hungary in particular has butted heads with Brussels in recent weeks over new laws governing the country's media, courts, and central bank, which prompted the EU to threaten to withhold a loan.

?Croatia joining is certainly positive for the EU, but people see that the benefits of membership may have been overstated,? says Pawel Swidlicki, an analyst at London-based think tank Open Europe, which favors a more economically liberal, decentralized EU.

?They see the current situation with the eurozone crisis and the fiscal pact and worry that they may lose out. After the war, they are reluctant to give up sovereignty. The fisheries policy has been a disaster, and Croatia is a maritime nation, while the EU places a heavy burden on SMEs [small and medium enterprises] in particular. But overall, people in Croatia do see the benefits of membership.?

While the consensus is that both the EU and Croatia will benefit from the Balkan country's accession, conventional wisdom also says that the process is unlikely to be painless.

Five Best Online Meeting Services [Hive Five]

Five Best Online Meeting Services If you work at a company with employees in offices around the globe, or you work in a small company but want to collaborate with a contractor who works from home or vendor across the country, you need a service that will let you connect with your team, share documents, collaborate on them, and in some cases even share your screen or webcam with them. Here are five of the best services to conduct productive online meetings, based on your nominations.

Earlier in the week we asked you which services you used for online meetings. You responded with lots of great options that you use personally or your company provides for you. Here's a look at the top five.

Five Best Online Meeting Services

Cisco WebEx ($19/mo - $49/mo)

WebEx is probably one of the oldest and most commonly used online meeting services in the market. WebEx's customer portfolio is impressive, and their online meeting service is incredibly easy to use. Install the WebEx plugin on your desktop that allows you to quickly host or join meetings, and a few clicks will get you working with your team, sharing screens, passing around the "presenter" role to others who have documents to show, or even chatting face-to-face in minutes. WebEx integrates with apps on your desktop so you can schedule an appointment and instantly add a meeting to it, start a meeting and email the attendees quickly, or even join a meeting on your mobile device or tablet. WebEx has a number of products and subscription plans for individuals, small businesses, or large enterprises that offer different features depending on what you need (and what you can afford), but one thing is sure-these features don't come cheap.

Five Best Online Meeting Services

GoToMeeting ($49/mo)

GoToMeeting is another tool used by individuals and enterprises to host online meetings, collaborate on documents, and share desktops and screens among colleagues. The service offers a wealth of enterprise features even to individual users, like desktop sharing, HD video conferencing, and mobile apps that allow you to attend GoToMeeting meetings on your iOS or Android device. Install the GoToMeeting application on your Mac or PC and you can start meetings with a single click, or set them up meticulously so you only share the information you want to with the people you want to invite. Attendees get a tiny plug-in to install before they can join your meetings, but once installed, joining your meetings is a one-click affair.

Five Best Online Meeting Services

Google+ Hangouts (Free)

A number of you mentioned that Google's recent addition of screen sharing and document collaboration to Google+ Hangouts has rocketed it to the top of your list of online meeting services. We can't blame you?it's no secret we love Google+ Hangouts, and the service keeps getting better, with free voice calls and large, clear video. In addition to the ability to see your friends clearly, host a meeting with several of them, share documents via Google Docs and collaborate, you get the benefit of being able to do it all on the web, for free. The only thing you need is a Google account, a webcam, and a microphone.

Five Best Online Meeting Services

TeamViewer (Free)

TeamViewer has a reputation for being a fast and hassle-free method to troubleshoot remote computers, but it's also a great method to get a team together on the web, share screens, chat, and work together on documents. TeamViewer allows you to?for the low price of free?start instant meetings, schedule them in advance and email your attendees when they should join and the access code needed to see your screen, share your screen or pass the "host" role to another meeting attendee so they can share theirs, and even stream video from your webcam to the group so you can all see one another's faces while you talk. TeamViewer also offers mobile apps so you can attend online meetings from your iOS or Android device.

Five Best Online Meeting Services

Join.me (Free, $19/mo Pro)

Also more often considered a remote control and support tool than an online meeting service, Join.me, a free service from the folks at LogMeIn, has the features to pull double duty. The service allows you to bring up to 250 viewers into the same room, share your screen with them, chat, send files around to your attendees, and, like the others, offers iOS and Android apps for remove viewing. If you're willing to spend some coin, the Join.me Pro gets you the ability to make another attendee the presenter so they can share their screen, the ability to pre-schedule and lock meetings, and a desktop app to make meeting management easy.

Now that you've seen the top five, it's time to put them to an all-out vote.

Honorable mentions this week go to two up and coming meeting services with passionate user-bases, iMeet and MeetingBurner. Both services offer a wealth of features including screen sharing, document collaboration, and multi-person meetings for free for most users. If you've tried the big names above and just haven't really found what you're looking for, or want to try something new, give these guys a shot.

Did your favorite not get enough nominations to make the top five? Know about a feature about one of the contenders we neglected to mention? Share your tips?and your alternative services?in the comments below.

Report: Russia to deliver combat jets to Syria (AP)

MOSCOW ? Russia has signed a contract to sell combat jets to Syria in a show of support for President Bashar Assad's regime, a newspaper reported Monday.

The business daily Kommersant said, citing an identified source close to Russia's Rosoboronexport state arms trader, that the $550-million deal envisages the delivery of 36 Yak-130 aircraft. A spokesman for Rosoboronexport refused to comment on the report.

If confirmed, the deal would mark an open defiance of international efforts to put pressure on Assad's regime, which has faced broad condemnation for its brutal crackdown on an uprising. The U.N. says more than 5,400 people have died over 10 months.

Russia's Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said last week that Moscow doesn't consider it necessary to offer an explanation or excuses over suspicions that a Russian ship had delivered munitions to Syria despite an EU arms embargo.

Lavrov told a news conference that Russia was acting in full respect of international law and wouldn't be guided by unilateral sanctions imposed by other nations.

He accused the West of turning a blind eye to attacks by opposition militants and supplies of weapons to the Syrian opposition from abroad and warned that Russia will block any attempt by the West to secure United Nations support for the use of force against Syria.

Russia has been a strong ally of Syria since Soviet times when the country was led by the president's father Hafez Assad. It has supplied Syria with aircraft, missiles, tanks and other modern weapons.

The Yak-130 is a twin-engined combat trainer jet that can also be used to attack ground targets. The Russian air force has recently placed an order for 55 such jets.

Costa Concordia cruise ship holds a big job for salvage crews

It's a disturbing sight: a massive, half-submerged cruise ship, dashed against rocks on an island off the Tuscan coast of Italy.

But as the gruesome job of searching for missing victims of the Costa Concordia tragedy winds down in the coming days, a daunting task awaits salvage workers poised to deal with the wrecked hulk itself. It's a task that may take months before the scene changes much.

Workers have begun placing booms around the ship to prevent oil spills as crews wait for the OK to start removing 2,400 tons of fuel and oil from the double-hulled vessel, which ran aground last week on the island of Giglio. The removal is estimated to take three to four weeks. Engineers, meanwhile, will gauge the structural damage to the $450-million ship. Next comes the decision on whether to repair and re-float it or cut it into pieces for parts and materials.

The work will be done by salvage companies that will inspect and assess the damage and make recommendations on how to proceed. But the job will be unusual for them: Such companies typically rescue container ships or oil tankers that run aground. Here, they must deal with a 951-foot-long, 17-deck cruise ship with 1,500 cabins.

"This one is quite difficult because you have all these compartments in the ship, which is top-heavy to begin with," said Frances Leckey, operations director for Resolve Marine Group, a Florida company that salvages wrecked ships. "This is not common at all."

Operators of the cruise ship said no decision will be made on whether the Costa Concordia can be repaired until all the missing passengers and crew members are recovered and workers remove the ship's fuel and oil to prevent a leak.

Authorities in Italy have accused the ship's captain of making a reckless maneuver that brought the cruise liner so close to shore that rocks tore holes in the side of the hull.

Of the 4,200 people aboard the ship, at least 11 were killed and 21 were still missing. Search efforts by divers continued Thursday.

"Costa's main focus remains on the search and rescue operation and on getting guests and crew home safely," said a spokesman for Costa Cruises, which operated the ship, carrying 4,200 people.

The spokesman said the cruise line company has not yet determined the cost of the rescue or future repair work. Costa Cruises' parent company, Miami-basedCarnival Corp., has said it expects to lose nearly $100 million from the loss of the use of the ship for at least 10 months. Carnival announced Thursday that in response to the accident it will review all of its safety and emergency response procedures among the 10 subsidiary cruise companies it operates.

The vessel is resting on its starboard side atop protruding rocks, in a position that salvage experts say makes inspecting and repairing the vessel complicated because any movement could drop the ship into deeper water.

"If you get it loose from the rock, there is a risk of slipping down further," said Martijn Schuttevaer, a spokesman for Royal Boskalis Westminster, the parent of Smit Salvage, the Dutch company hired to pump fuel from the Costa Concordia. Costa Cruises has yet to hire a firm to assess the damage to the ship, he said.

Pumping the fuel from the vessel could take three to four weeks and require workers to drill fist-size holes in the hull, Schuttevaer said. Smit workers must heat the fuel so it flows out faster, he said.

While the fuel is being removed, salvage specialists say, divers will probably inspect the vessel to determine the extent of the damage and produce detailed surveys of the rocks and ocean floor around the ship.

"It could take many weeks of preparation and many weeks to execute the salvage plan," said Tim Beaver, president of the American Salvage Assn. trade group.

If Costa Cruises decides to repair the ship, the first steps would be to seal the gashes in the hull and pump the water out of the vessel, salvage experts said. As water is pumped out, they said, crews probably would use cables to help pull the vessel vertical.

But pulling the ship upright could cause more damage to the hull because it rests on coastal rocks, Beaver said. Further complicating the job, he said, is that it may be impossible to position cranes on the rocks on the starboard side to lift the vessel.

"On its most basic level, it is a simple physics problem," said Beaver, who has been working in the marine salvage business for 35 years. "But it's complicated by the details."

Experts say cutting up the vessel and hauling away the pieces on barges would be a simpler task but would take much longer.

"In this case," said Schuttevaer of Smit Salvage, "so much of the ship is above water that you could remove everything above water by hand, bit by bit."

U.S. gives church groups a year on birth control rule (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? The Obama administration on Friday ruled that religiously affiliated nonprofit organizations, including hospitals and universities, will have to offer birth-control coverage to women employees but gave the organizations an extra year to comply.

In a decision expected to draw opposition from religious conservatives, the Department of Health and Human Services issued a final rule requiring affiliated groups to provide a broad range of services, from implanted contraceptive devices to the morning-after pill. Many do not at present.

The government's decision does not apply to churches, synagogues, mosques, temples and some religiously-affiliated elementary and secondary schools, which remain exempt.

But it comes as a blow to the interests of some religious authorities.

When HHS first announced plans to adopt the birth control rule last August, it stirred protests from religious groups including the Roman Catholic Church that wanted the exemption to apply to a broader category of organizations. The Catholic Church holds contraception to be sinful.

The change, intended to reduce unwanted pregnancies and abortions, is part of President Barack Obama's healthcare overhaul, his signature domestic policy achievement, which is facing major challenges from the Supreme Court and Republicans this year as the president seeks re-election.

"This decision was made after very careful consideration, including the important concerns some have raised about religious liberty," Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said in a statement.

"This proposal strikes the appropriate balance between respecting religious freedom and increasing access to important preventive services."

Religious-affiliated nonprofit organizations, many of which currently do not offer birth control coverage, have until August 1, 2013, to comply with the new rule. Other employers must begin covering the services from August 1, 2012.

Suddenly 'neck and neck' ? Romney, Gingrich in SC (AP)

CHARLESTON, S.C. ? On the eve of a Southern showdown, Mitt Romney conceded Friday he's in a tight race with Newt Gingrich for Saturday's South Carolina primary in a Republican campaign suddenly turned turbulent.

It's "neck and neck," Romney declared, while a third presidential contender, former Sen. Rick Santorum, swiped at both men in hopes of springing yet another campaign surprise.

Several days after forecasting a Romney victory in his state, Sen. Jim DeMint said the campaign's first Southern primary was now a two-man race between the former Massachusetts governor, who has struggled in recent days with questions about his personal wealth and taxes, and Gingrich, the former House speaker who has been surging in polls after a pair of well-received debate performances.

The stakes were high as Republicans sought a challenger to Democratic President Barack Obama. Television advertising by the candidates and their supporters exceeded $10 million here, much of it spent in the past two weeks, and mailboxes were stuffed with campaign flyers.

In a bit of home-state boosterism, DeMint said the primary winner was "likely to be the next president of the United States."

Indeed, the winner of the state's primary has gone on to capture the Republican nomination each year since 1980.

A victory by Romney would place him in a commanding position heading into the Florida primary on Jan. 31. He and an organization supporting him are already airing television ads in that state, which is one of the country's costliest in which to campaign.

If the former Massachusetts governor stumbles in South Carolina, it could portend a long, drawn-out battle for the nomination stretching well into spring and further expose rifts inside the party between those who want a candidate who can defeat Obama more than anything else, and those whose strong preference is for a solid conservative.

Romney sounded anything but confident as he told reporters that in South Carolina, "I realize that I had a lot of ground to make up and Speaker Gingrich is from a neighboring state, well known, popular ... and frankly to be in a neck-and-neck race at this last moment is kind of exciting."

Left unspoken was that he swept into South Carolina 10 days ago on the strength of a strong victory in the New Hampshire primary and maintained a double-digit lead in the South Carolina polls for much of the week.

Campaigning in Gilbert, S.C., on Friday, Romney demanded that Gingrich release hundreds of supporting documents relating to an ethics committee investigation into his activities while he was speaker of the House in the mid-1990s.

""Of course he should," he told reporters. Referring to the House Democratic leader, he said, "Nancy Pelosi has the full record of that ethics investigation. You know it's going to get out ahead of the general election."

That was an attempt to turn the tables on Gingrich, who has demanded Romney release his income tax returns before the weekend primary so Republicans can know in advance if they contain anything that could compromise the party's chances against Obama this fall.

Gingrich's campaign brushed off Romney's demand, calling it a "panic attack" brought on by sinking poll numbers.

"Don't you love these guys?" the former speaker said in Orangeburg. "He doesn't release anything. He doesn't answer anything and he's even confused about whether he will ever release anything. And then they decide to pick a fight over releasing stuff?"

In January 1997, Gingrich became the first speaker ever reprimanded and fined for ethics violations, slapped with a $300,000 penalty. He said he'd failed to follow legal advice concerning the use of tax-exempt contributions to advance potentially partisan goals, but he was also cleared of numerous other allegations.

At the same time he fended off a demand on one front Friday, Gingrich was less than eager to face further questions made by his second wife, Marianne, who said in an ABC interview broadcast Thursday night that he had once sought an open marriage so he could keep the mistress who later became his current wife.

He denies the ex-wife's account.

On his final lap through the state, Santorum campaigned as the Goldilocks candidate ? just right for the state's conservative voters.

"One candidate is too radioactive, a little too hot," he said, referring to Gingrich. "And we have another candidate who is just too darn cold, who doesn't have bold plans," he added, speaking of Romney.

His campaign also announced endorsements from conservative leaders in the upcounty portion of the state around Greenville, where the heaviest concentration of evangelical voters lives.

Santorum, a former Pennsylvania senator, dismissed Texas Rep. Ron Paul, the fourth contender in the race. "There are four, three of whom have a chance to win the nomination," he said, including himself.

Paul, who finished third in the Iowa caucuses and second in the New Hampshire primary, has had a limited presence in South Carolina.

But he flew to six cities on a burst of campaigning on the race's final day, and drew applause for having returned to Washington, D.C., earlier in the week to vote against Obama's requested increase in the debt limit.

"When you hear the word principle, you think of Ron Paul. He's the embodiment of that," said Derek Smith, a 26-year-old engineer for the Navy in Charleston. "If he were to run as a third-party candidate, I would vote for him unconditionally."

Paul has said he has no intention of doing that.

Interviewed on C-SPAN, Santorum said the race "has just transformed itself in the last 24 hours." It was hard for any of the campaigns to argue with that.

In a bewildering series of events on Thursday, Romney was stripped of his victory in the Jan. 3 Iowa caucuses by state party officials, who said a recount showed Santorum ahead by 34 votes.

Then came an unexpected withdrawal by Texas Gov. Rick Perry, who endorsed Gingrich. But Gingrich was suddenly caught in a controversy caused by his ex-wife's accusations.

At a two-hour debate that capped the day, Gingrich drew applause when he strongly attacked ABC and the "liberal news media" in general for injecting the issue into the final days of the South Carolina campaign.

By contrast, Romney faced a round of boos from the audience when he stuck by earlier statements that he would wait until April to release his tax returns.

Romney has stumbled several times in recent days, including once when he said he paid an effective tax rate of about 15 percent. That's half what many middle-income Americans pay, but it's what the law stipulates because his income derives from investments, which are taxed at a lower rate than wages.

Gingrich posted his own tax returns online during the Thursday debate, reporting he paid 31.5 percent of his income to the IRS.

Maya Grinberg: Measuring the Business Impact of Social Media

Social media is no longer a stop-and-go investment, but rather a long term strategic channel that, when integrated with other marketing efforts, allows brands to connect with users over time. Results of a recent survey conducted by Wildfire find social media efforts valuable in their ability to grow brand awareness and increase dialogue with customers. In addition to spending more time thinking about how to engage audiences, marketers will soon begin to measure social media's impact on the business through a more traditional ROI definition: attributable sales and costs.

In November 2011, Wildfire conducted an ROI survey of over 700 marketers from all around the World. The results were compiled into an easy-to-digest infographic, found below.

What do you think of the results? Where does your brand fall in line with these alignments?

Blocking metabolic protein improves movement in animals with ALS

Wednesday, January 18, 2012

Turning off a protein that helps cells balance energy increases animal mobility and reduces the death of nerve cells that control movement in animal models of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), according to a study in the January 18 issue of The Journal of Neuroscience. The findings may one day guide new directions for the treatment of the progressive neurodegenerative disorder, for which there is currently no cure.

ALS is characterized by the breakdown of brain and spinal cord nerve cells that control muscles, eventually leading to weakness and death. In many neurodegenerative diseases, including ALS, nerve cells have difficulty maintaining a sufficient supply of energy ? a factor that may contribute to nerve cell dysfunction and death. Recent studies show some people with ALS experience metabolic defects, such as using too much energy while at rest.

In the current study, Robert Kalb, MD, of the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, and colleagues examined spinal cord cells from mice that produce a mutant protein present in familial forms of ALS. The cells had abnormally high activity of an enzyme that helps balance a cell's energy production and usage ? called AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) ? compared with cells from normal mice. By reducing AMPK activity in the cells that produce the mutant protein, the researchers found they could reduce motor cell death.

"We show that AMPK is activated in models of neurodegenerative diseases, and blocking or eliminating this enzyme promotes the survival of nerve cells," said Kalb, senior author of the study. "These observations suggest that responses of nerve cells to energy deficits, although well-intentioned, may in fact contribute to neurodegenerative disorders."

To test the effects of blocking AMPK activity on behavior, Kalb's team bred the microscopic roundworm Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans) to make the mutant ALS protein. While the mutant roundworms initially displayed difficulties moving, when the researchers reduced AMPK activity, their mobility improved.

"Since AMPK and metabolic diseases, like diabetes and obesity, have been studied for decades, this study opens new possibilities for ALS therapy," said Jean-Philippe Loeffler, PhD, an ALS expert from the University of Strasbourg. "Numerous drugs exist to manipulate this enzyme, and the next step in this research will be to demonstrate that drugs targeting AMPK are able to increase the lifespan of animal models of ALS."

Liberia's Sirleaf takes oath for second term, promises reconciliation

President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf stressed national reconciliation at her second inauguration ceremony today in Liberia, a nation still emerging from years of war.

President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf pledged to work harder toward achieving national reconciliation at her second inauguration ceremony today in Liberia, a nation that emerged from civil war nearly a decade ago.

The ceremony itself showed some progress toward that goal: The top leaders of the main opposition party, Congress for Democratic Change (CDC), agreed to attend the inauguration after striking a deal with the ruling Unity Party over the weekend to recognize Ms. Sirleaf as president. The CDC had boycotted the second round of elections due to claims of electoral fraud.?

While the show of unity augers well for Liberia's reconciliation efforts, challenges remain. Negotiations are still ongoing to determine what role the CDC may play in the upcoming government. And?there is plenty of unhappiness with the opposition's decision to recognize Sirleaf among the rank and file, particularly unemployed youth and ex-combatants from the 14 years of civil war?who feel they have not benefited from her government.

?The decision offers prospects for building political coexistence between the opposition and the Unity Party,? says Dan Sayree, director of the Liberian Institute for Democracy in Monrovia. ?It offers hope for Liberian democracy and political stability.??

But he added that Sirleaf needed to address some of the concerns of CDC supporters many of who feel they haven?t benefited from the nation?s development.

?Her focus on youth and whether this will take the form of legislation that can be handed on between governments or whether it will be a means for recruiting young people into the party remains to be seen,? Sayree says.

Sirleaf: youth sent a message

Sirleaf?s inaugural message was directed at the youth in particular, many of whom rioted in the streets of Monrovia last month to express their anger at the government's late payment of casual workers' wages.?

?The youth of Liberia are our future and they sent us a message,? said Sirleaf. ?They are impatient, they are eager to be rid the years of conflict and deprivation, they are anxious to know that their homeland offers a ground for hope. Let me say to them, we heard that message. It is our solemn obligation to ensure that their hope will not be in vain.?

US Secretary of State Hilary Clinton and numerous presidents of West African states attended the ceremony in the capital of Monrovia. They were joined by?the CDC chief Winston Tubman, a Harvard-educated lawyer, and his No. 2, soccer legend?George Weah.

A commitment to reconciliation

When asked why the party leadership had decided to attend the event Mr. Tubman said the party leadership was there to demonstrate its commitment to reconciliation and political unity.

For college-bound students and their parents, January marks when they can complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid for the 2012-2013 academic year.

The FAFSA is a standardized application used to determine eligibility for federal, state, and, in some cases, institutional financial aid.

System updates and enhancements have helped to make filing the FAFSA easier for students and families.

"We encourage students and parents to complete the FAFSA online at www.fafsa.gov because the instructions, help features and built-in edits which reduce applicant error simply aren't an option when completing the paper FAFSA," said Karen Misjak, executive director of the Iowa College Student Aid Commission (Iowa College Aid). "It is also processed faster than the paper version, which can be an important factor when meeting financial aid deadlines."

Iowa College Aid urges all college-bound students to complete the FAFSA regardless of their financial situation.

To help Iowa families, Iowa College Aid offers the following FAFSA filing tips.

*? File the FAFSA no matter your financial situation. Even if families do not think they will qualify for need-based financial aid, they still should file. Many colleges require completed FAFSA applications to be considered for institutional aid. In addition, completed FAFSA are necessary to be eligible for federal Stafford loans. Completing the FAFSA does not obligate a student to accept any aid offered.

*? Never pay to file the FAFSA. Students can file the FAFSA for free at www.fafsa.gov. Reputable resources, including Iowa College Aid, are available for free assistance.

*? Meet state and college deadlines. Many states, including Iowa, have a FAFSA filing deadline for state-funded scholarships, grants and work-study opportunities.

To be eligible for several State of Iowa financial aid programs, a FAFSA must be completed and received at the federal processing center before July 1 (earlier priority filing deadlines exist for certain programs). Students also need to complete the Iowa Financial Aid Application, which can be accessed through the statewide community web portal, www.IHaveaPlanIowa.gov.

*? Double check information to avoid delays. Make sure the student's Social Security number and the parent's Social Security number are typed in the correct spaces. Mix-ups will cause processing delays.

*? Electronically sign your FAFSA. The electronic application is not complete until both the student and parent electronically sign the FAFSA using their Federal Student Aid Personal Identification Numbers. Go to the Federal Student Aid PIN website,www.pin.ed.gov, to obtain a PIN prior to starting the FAFSA.

Students and families who have questions about financial aid, or are interested in learning more about the resources available through Iowa College Aid can contact their Information Service Center at (877) 272-4456.

Additional resources are available on Iowa College Aid's website, www.IowaCollegeAid.gov.

Zebrafish may help speed drug discovery

Tuesday, January 17, 2012

Tiny zebrafish just may give scientists one solution to information overload in the search for new drugs therapies.

High throughput screening, which uses robotics and computers to rapidly screen drugs, genes or proteins, to identify, for example, compounds that are best at destroying cancer or restoring insulin-producing cells. The technology has both revolutionized and stymied research, said Dr. Jeffrey Mumm, biologist in the Medical College of Georgia at Georgia Health Sciences University.

While the decade-old technology can screen 100,000 compounds in a day, there is no efficient next step for whittling to a manageable number the resulting say, 2,500 compounds that on first blush appear to have potential. Consequently, drug discovery has actually stalled, creating a scientific "indigestion," Mumm said. Drug failure rates and discovery costs, on the other hand, have escalated.

"The next best thing to do is probably take all the compounds and put them into an animal model that mimics the disease you are trying to cure but nobody has that kind of budget or would know where to start with that number of candidates," Mumm said.

One solution is pairing zebrafish with reporter-based assays that make certain parts glow, according to Mumm's research published in the journal PLoS ONE. He calls it Automated Reporter Quantification.

"It's a way to cut to the chase rather than having to make educated guess about which of the 2,500 compounds are really of interest," said Mumm. Zebrafish, which start out as single cell organisms that are fully functioning by day four, already are an invaluable research model for a wide variety of diseases, such as Mumm's efforts to regenerate cells in the face of degenerative diseases of the eyes or pancreas.

To produce a model of type 1 diabetes, for example, he uses a single drug to destroy insulin-producing cells; 24 hours later, he knows those cells are gone because the glow is gone in the transparent zebrafish.

Now, he can leave the fish in the well plates, which look like plastic ice trays with cubes about the size of pencil tops and come in multiples of 96. The individual wells enable him to quickly reassess the impact of the thousands of compounds identified by high-throughput screening in a living specimen. Simply put: Does the glow come back? The next step becomes logical and doable: study the 20 or so compounds that continued to show promise in a mouse model. These steps to the fish then mouse, called biological validation, have been a real bottleneck in science post high-throughput screening, Mumm said. "This is going to give you much more thorough information about how compounds affect the overall physiology of a living being," Mumm said.

He noted that reporter-based assays number in the thousands so what they can help find is essentially limited only by the imagination.

He's used one to monitor a major signaling pathway that consistently shows up in cancer. "We hooked the pathway up to a reporter that told us whether it was on or off, then tested whether we could modulate it over time and, sure enough, it was very easy to do," Mumm said. "Name the cancer and basically you have WNT activated so there is a huge effort in cancer therapeutics to try and essentially shut it down."

CES 2012: Hands on with the Origami power-folding stroller (Yahoo! News)

The?Origami stroller by 4moms caught our eye on the show floor here at the?Consumer Electronics Show. Using a built-in rechargeable battery, it will fold and unfold itself with the touch of a button. If you've ever struggled to fold up a baby stroller, you know exactly how great this idea is.

The built-in battery that makes it work recharges when you use the stroller, generating a new charge from the spin of the wheels. And the stroller will never fold down when it detects a child is still strapped in.

Throw in the safety lights on the front and the LCD screen in the handle and you have the stroller I wish was available when my kids were that young.

Houston Texans' Arian Foster was in his first season as a starter in 2010 when the Texans hosted the Ravens, and Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis grabbed the running back after a play. Lewis had already become a fan and told Foster: 'I love the way you play this game.' Since then the pair have become friends off the field and shared their mutual admiration for each other this week as Houston is scheduled to face Baltimore on Jan. 15, 2012, in the playoffs. Ray Lewis hugged coach John Harbaugh and barked: "They're coming through Baltimore."

Yes, they are, Ray, at least this weekend.

The divisional round of the NFL playoffs will make a stop at the Inner Harbor on Sunday when the Ravens host the Houston Texans. It's the first home playoff game under Harbaugh, who led the team to a wild-card berth in his previous three seasons.

While the Ravens (12-4) don't have home-field advantage for the entire AFC playoffs unless New England loses Saturday night to Denver, it's a cozy start for Baltimore, which won all eight games at M&T Bank Stadium in 2011.

"If you look at wild-card weekend, I don't think that there was one home team that lost the whole weekend," Lewis said accurately. "When you get into that, it plays a big momentum. It's a big momentum swing for you. It's just hard to win on the road. I don't care who you are, I don't care how good you are, it's hard to win on the road.

"For us to work as hard as we did, get 12 wins, do the things we were supposed to do, and now get this home playoff game, we have positioned ourselves to be in the right place. Now we have to go finish it."

The divisional round begins Saturday with New Orleans (13-4) at San Francisco (13-3). It ends with the New York Giants (10-7) at defending Super Bowl champion Green Bay (15-1).

Houston lost 29-14 at Baltimore in October, when the Texans were healthier than they have been for the last six weeks. But they've dealt with their injuries so well that they won their first division crown and, last week in their postseason debut, beat the Bengals handily.

So if hosting a playoff game is relatively new for the Ravens ? they have done it three times, but haven't won one since 2000, the year they took the Super Bowl ? being in one is totally new this year for the Texans.

Also new would be a win over the Ravens, who are 5-0 against Houston.

"It's been pretty one-sided so, we've got to get on the board," tackle Eric Winston said. "At the same time, you've got to look back on it and I don't think a lot of that stuff is going to have a lot of bearing on this game either, though. So, there's different guys, there's a different situation and we all know from past experiences that playoffs, funny things happen in the playoffs and games turn out a lot different than they did in the regular season. So hopefully we can hold true to that."

The Packers also have a regular-season win over their opponent, a 38-35 victory at the Meadowlands. It was one of Green Bay's most difficult games.

The Giants have won four of five since that loss, including manhandling Atlanta 24-2 last weekend. Their pass rush has come alive and the running game has awakened.

So the Giants believe they match up pretty well with the NFL's best team. So much so that All-Pro defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul is predicting victory. Then again, is he supposed to predict defeat?

"It comes from the heart. Who in his right mind is going to say the team is going to lose?" he said with a wide smile. "Nobody wants that. We're trying to go all the way, win the tournament."

No one has won at Lambeau Field since Miami on Oct. 17, 2010. The Giants were blown out 45-17 in Game 15 of that season when they were in position to make the playoffs.

But New York shocked the Packers in the 2007 NFC championship game, then pulled off an even bigger upset by taking down the undefeated Patriots in the Super Bowl. Green Bay is wary ? as wary as a 15-1 team needs to be.

"There is a reason why we are both playing in this game. We are two of the last four teams in the NFC," Packers coach Mike McCarthy said. "They are playing well and they wouldn't be here if they were not, so to me, that is to be expected. I think they are playing better than when they played us and earlier in the season they had some tough defeats also. It is playoff football and they are a very good football team."

San Francisco makes its return to the postseason after an eight-year absence and gets quite a challenge: the potent Saints and record-setting quarterback Drew Brees. New Orleans was unstoppable in the second half against Detroit in the wild-card round, but the 49ers' defense is immensely better than the Lions' unit.

"They've got everything going for them right now," 49ers defensive coordinator Vic Fangio said of Brees and company. "They've got a great quarterback who's got great weapons to throw to. He's got a great offensive line in front of him. The guy's only been sacked 24 times in the regular season, and that's off of 700 times they've thrown the ball, dropped back to pass. So, that's impressive in and of itself, and to top it off, they've got a great scheme. They really give you a lot of offense to prepare for."

The 49ers offense did just enough all season, thanks to the running of Frank Gore and the overall offensive efficiency: just 10 turnovers all season. San Francisco also led the league with 38 takeaways and a plus-28 turnover differential.

New England has been maligned for a defense that gives up tons of yards, ranking 31st, ahead of only ? get this ? the Packers. It hasn't mattered much as the Patriots (13-3) won their final eight games, including a 41-23 victory at Denver last month.

While much of America is marveling over Tim Tebow's heroics for the Broncos (9-8), the response in New England isn't quite so awe-filled.

"You know they had some good things and some bad things," defensive back Sterling Moore said, "so you kind of just want to take the good things that they did and kind of avoid the bad things that they did. But it's one of those games where you're going to have to be mentally sharp and know your assignment and do your assignment only."
