Neon Genesis Evangelion SH-06D limited edition Android phone arrives June 29th (video)

Neon Genesis Evangelion SH06D limited edition Android phone gets a release date video

Sharp's heavily customized NERV Edition SH-06D phone finally has preorder and release date info on Japanese carrier NTT DoCoMo, and Neon Genesis Evangelion fanboys will want to get there early. It appears there will only be 10,000 of the phones available, with 3,000 sold via NTT DoCoMo's online store starting June 29th over three days, with 1,000 of them going on sale each day at noon. The rest will be sold at other retailers with preorders kicking off June 16th and although there's no price specified, we're expecting it to be around 25,000 - 30,000 yen with a two year contract. As we saw when the phone was announced in March, it features a heavily customized case, hardware buttons and 3D Android 2.3 skin designed to reflect its heritage. Getting one may require some camping out either in front of a store or on the carrier's website (in Japan of course, we don't expect ot see any of these overseas), but at least it's got to be easier than life in Tokyo-3. Check out an in-universe video look at how NERV and NTT DoCoMo supposedly came together to develop the collectible's unique features after the break and our impressions of an unskinned SH-06D here.

Fonda not taking Cannes glam attention seriously

(AP) ? Don't get Jane Fonda wrong. The 74-year-old actress got a thrill when she wowed the fashion crowd at France's Cannes Film Festival in a form-fitting, two-tone Stella McCartney gown.

"It's very nice at my age to have glamour attention ? something I missed out on when I was younger so it's nice to getting it now," she says.

But the two-time Academy Award-winner says she can't take it too seriously: "It goes as fast as the walk on the red carpet does, it's over and real life comes back."

Fonda spoke in an interview Monday to promote her new independent film, "Peace, Love & Misunderstanding" that debuts in limited release and on Video On Demand Friday. Fonda is also taking on a recurring role as a media executive in Aaron Sorkin's new HBO drama "Newsroom," and has signed on to play former first lady Nancy Reagan in the Lee Daniels film "The Butler," due out next year.

In "Peace, Love & Misunderstanding," Fonda plays Grace, a hippie grandmother living in Woodstock, N.Y., who is reunited with her estranged daughter Diane, an uptight New York lawyer played by Catherine Keener. Fonda and Keener say their desire to work with each other was one reason both signed on for the film.

Keener, who has garnered Oscar nominations for her roles in "Capote" and "Being John Malkovich," admits to being a bit awed when meeting her co-star, saying "That was just cool for me."

Fonda says she found a friend in Keener that she wanted to hold on to. "When I was younger ? you make a movie and it's over and you go on and you don't necessarily stay in touch but you're older you realize, 'If I want to be her friend I'm going to have to really make it happen.' So I've tried to stay in touch. We've stayed pals."

The Oscar-winner says having Keener around also helped her get into the role of the free-spirited Grace. "What was fun for me is that I'm not a hippie. She kind of is," she said. "So she kind of got me into the zeitgeist of the '60's and Woodstock and being a hippie. She was very helpful."

US economic outlook worsens after jobs report

(AP) ? The faltering U.S. job market has prompted economists to take a much dimmer view of the country's growth prospects. That's a shift from just a few weeks ago, when many were upgrading their forecasts.

Friday's surprisingly bleak jobs report for May followed a spate of disappointing data. Manufacturing activity slowed, an index of home sales fell and consumer confidence tumbled. Mounting troubles in Europe and elsewhere have heightened economists' concerns.

"The latest economic data have been decisively disappointing," Michael Feroli, an economist at JPMorgan Chase, wrote in a client note.

JPMorgan Chase sharply reduced its growth forecast for the July-September quarter to a 2 percent annual rate, down from 3 percent. It cited the weaker U.S. hiring and a likely drop in U.S. exports related to slower growth overseas.

And JPMorgan Chase now forecasts growth of 2.1 percent for 2012, down from 2.3 percent.

Julia Coronado, an economist at BNP Paribas in New York, said she now expects growth of 2.2 percent this year, down from her previous forecast of 2.4 percent. She also revised down her estimate of growth in the April-June quarter to a 2.2 percent annual rate, from a 2.5 percent rate.

"We keep hoping that we're going to turn a corner and move into a stronger phase of recovery, and the door keeps getting slammed shut," Coronado said.

Forecasting firm Macroeconomic Advisers and Swiss bank UBS have also marked down their expectations since Friday's jobs report.

As a general rule, it takes about 2.5 percent growth to generate enough hiring to keep up with population growth and prevent the unemployment rate from rising. The reduced forecasts suggest that hiring may not strengthen much this year.

After months of fitful expansion since the recession ended three years ago, many analysts had expected the economy to begin strengthening steadily.

Last month, the National Association for Business Economics said its latest survey of economists found rising expectations for job gains and housing construction. And in April, the Federal Reserve raised its forecast for growth this year to nearly 2.7 percent, from a January estimate of 2.5 percent.

Now, it looks as if the recovery is stumbling again.

The biggest blow was Friday's jobs report. It said employers added only 69,000 jobs in May, the fewest in a year. The government also said far fewer jobs were added in the previous two months than first thought ? 11,000 fewer in March and 38,000 fewer in April. And the unemployment rate rose to 8.2 percent from 8.1 percent, the first increase since last June.

Less hiring means fewer Americans have money to spend. That holds down consumer spending, which drives about 70 percent of the economy and helps fuel job growth. And a rising unemployment rate tends to reduce confidence. That can further shrink spending.

Even at stronger levels of hiring, Americans' incomes had been already growing only weakly. They increased 0.2 percent in April, the government said last week, the slowest pace in five months.

Other reports last week showed that more people sought unemployment benefits, a sign that hiring could remain sluggish. Construction spending rose, but by less than many economists had forecast. And the government said the economy expanded at an anemic 1.9 percent annual rate in the first three months of 2012. That's down from 3 percent in the fourth quarter.

The run of bleak reports extended into Monday. Companies cut their orders to factories for a second straight month, the government said. And a gauge of business investment plans fell.

On top of that, Europe's financial crisis is worsening. Worries are growing that in elections later this month, Greek voters will reject the terms of a bailout and lead the country to drop the euro. That could ignite financial chaos and perhaps force larger economies among the 17 countries that use the euro, such as Spain and Italy, to abandon the currency, too.

The resulting crisis would slow U.S. exports, about 20 percent of which go to Europe. Fear about a collapse of the euro has contributed to a nearly 10 percent drop in the S&P 500 stock index since April 2. Falling stock prices tend to damage consumer confidence and reduce spending.

Key developing countries, such as China, India and Brazil, are also reporting weaker growth. Those countries are big markets for U.S. heavy machinery. U.S. farmers also export corn, soybeans and other grains to China.

"You've got deterioration on all fronts at this point," said Scott Anderson, an economist at Wells Fargo Securities.

Anderson said Wells Fargo will likely reduce its forecasts for U.S. growth.

Still, some trends remain positive for the U.S. economy. Gas prices have been falling, which puts more money in Americans' pockets. With mortgage rates at record lows, more Americans are buying homes. Builders have increased spending on construction. Auto sales are up.

Maury Harris, chief U.S. economist at UBS, said the weak May jobs report shows businesses are nervous about the economic outlook. Yet consumers remain willing to spend. Their spending rose 0.3 percent in April, above the 0.2 percent rise in March. That qualifies as a bright spot in last week's reports. Harris expects consumer spending to keep rising and to reinvigorate business activity by fall.

Jack Kleinhenz, chief economist at the National Retail Federation, the nation's largest retail trade group, says he's sticking with the group's annual retail sales growth forecast of 3.4 percent for now.

"I'm concerned, but I am not ready to put up a red flag on everything," Kleinhenz said.

G7 to hold emergency euro zone talks, Spain top concern

TORONTO/BERLIN (Reuters) - Finance chiefs of the Group of Seven leading industrialized powers will hold emergency talks on the euro zone debt crisis on Tuesday in a sign of heightened global alarm about strains in the 17-nation European currency area.

With Greece, Ireland and Portugal all under international bailout programs, financial markets are anxious about the risks from a seething Spanish banking crisis and a June 17 Greek election that may lead to Athens leaving the euro zone.

"Markets remain skeptical that the measures taken thus far are sufficient to secure the recovery in Europe and remove the risk that the crisis will deepen. So we obviously believe that more steps need to be taken," White House press secretary Jay Carney told reporters.

Canadian Finance Minister Jim Flaherty said ministers and central bankers of the United States, Canada, Japan, Britain, Germany, France and Italy would hold a special conference call, raising pressure on the Europeans to act.

"The real concern right now is Europe of course - the weakness in some of the banks in Europe, the fact they're undercapitalized, the fact the other European countries in the euro zone have not taken sufficient action yet to address those issues of undercapitalization of banks and building an adequate firewall," Flaherty told reporters.

The disclosure of the normally confidential teleconference came as European Union paymaster Germany said it was up to Spain, the latest euro zone country in the markets' firing line, to decide if it needed financial assistance, after media reports that Berlin was pressing Madrid to request aid.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel and leaders of her centre-right coalition said in a joint statement: "All the instruments are available to guarantee the safety of banks in the euro zone."

They effectively ruled out Spanish calls to allow euro zone rescue funds to lend money directly to recapitalize Spanish banks, which are weighed down with bad property debts, without the government having to take a bailout program.

Berlin is pressing reluctant euro zone partners, including close ally France, to agree to give up more fiscal sovereignty as part of a closer European fiscal union.

A G7 source, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue, said there were concerns about the risk of a bank run in Spain, which is struggling to recapitalize nationalized lender Bankia and smaller banks stricken by the collapse of a property bubble.

"There's a heightened sense of alarm over developments in Europe, particularly in Spain," the source told Reuters. "There is concern on whether there will be a bank run in Spain that could have repercussions beyond the euro zone."

SPAIN TO TEST MARKET

Spain's borrowing costs have soared to around 6.6 percent for 10-year bonds with the risk premium over safe haven German Bunds reaching a euro era record. Madrid plans to issue 1-2 billion euros in 10-year debt on Thursday in a key market test.

The G7 source said the United States, the current G7 chair, was unwilling to allow International Monetary Fund money to be used to support the euro zone, so there was little prospect of the global community acting as one to contain the crisis.

A senior Brazilian government official said the euro zone crisis would also be a central focus of this month's G20 summit in Los Cabos, Mexico.

"We insist in our position that European countries with enough space to stimulate the economy, even via fiscal stimulus (not many that can do that), should do it now," said the official, referring mostly to Germany.

The euro climbed and safe haven U.S. and German bonds eased off last week's record low yields as speculation mounted that authorities will act to keep the euro zone intact and overcome the debt crisis.

EU leaders hold their next regular summit on June 28-29 and their chairman, Herman Van Rompuy, said he would put forward a roadmap to design a plan for closer economic union in the euro area by the end of this year.

He said he would present the main building blocks at the summit, including banking integration proposals on "supervision, on deposit insurance and on resolution".

Germany, keen to limit liabilities for its taxpayers as the biggest contributor to euro zone rescue funds, has so far rejected proposals for a banking union with a joint deposit guarantee and a common resolution fund for failing banks.

Officials say such measures can come only at the end of a drive to closer fiscal union.

Before meeting European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso in Berlin, Merkel said they would consider the "medium-term goal" of the need to put systemically important banks under a European supervisory authority.

"The world wants to know how we conceive the political union that will accompany monetary union, and we have to provide an answer to this question in the foreseeable future," she said.

CHINA EYES GREEK EXIT

China, another major G20 power, has instructed key agencies including the central bank to come up with plans to deal with potential economic risks of a Greek withdrawal from the euro zone, three sources with knowledge of the matter told Reuters.

"It's very urgent," one source said. "The government has asked every department to analyze measures to cope with a Greek exit from the euro zone and make their own suggestions as soon as possible."

The plans may include measures to keep the yuan currency stable, increase checks on cross-border capital flows and stepping up policies to stabilize the domestic economy, the sources said.

Euro zone officials have sought to persuade Beijing, which has vast foreign currency reserves mostly in U.S. Treasury bonds, to back the euro zone by buying its troubled countries' bonds. But Chinese officials have been reticent, concerned at the risks and mindful of Chinese public criticism.

In one ray of light, Portugal's international lenders said on Monday its year-old bailout program was on track, offering support for Lisbon as it seeks to avoid following Greece into a second rescue package.

Finance Minister Vitor Gaspar said he would stick to the program after getting a thumbs-up in the latest inspection review by the European Union and IMF, and that the lenders would recommend payment of the next 4.1 billion euro ($5 billion) tranche from the rescue fund.

Three leading Portuguese banks said they would draw on funds from the country's 78 billion euro bailout to meet tough new capital requirements as they struggle with the debt crisis.

Southington finance board votes 4-2 to approve increase in tax rate

Friday, June 1, 2012 9:56 PM EDT

SOUTHINGTON ? The Board of Finance has set the new tax rate at 27.48 mils, over a week later than mandated by the town charter due to a partisan disagreement over the budget.

The board met briefly Tuesday and voted 4-2 on the new tax rate, which is 3.2 mils over the current rate. The vote went along party lines, with the two Democratic members, Anthony Casale and Sandra Feld, voting against.

Originally, the board met May 16 to take up the issue, but tabled it because the Republicans didn?t have a sufficient majority to pass the tax rate. With Board Chairman John Leary absent, the resulting vote to approve was 3-2, short of the 4-2 majority required to set the tax rate.

During the earlier meeting, both sides accused each other of making inaccurate statements about the recently concluded budget process. Joseph Labieniec, who was acting as chairman in Leary?s absence, said the tax rate is simply a mathematical formula, regardless of whether or not one approves the budget as adopted.

Casale insisted the Republicans simply rubber-stamped the budget, without ever considering serious spending cuts. Casale and Feld repeatedly refused to vote for the tax rate in protest.

Labieniec pointed out that the board is required by town charter to set the tax rate by the third Monday in May, which this year was May 21.

Town Manager Garry Brumback consulted Town Attorney Mark Sciota for a legal opinion. Brumback reported that the panel could abdicate the responsibility of setting the tax rate to the Town Council or call a special meeting when Leary was back in town, which is what the board opted to do.

The board?s disagreement came in the wake of the Town Council?s 6-3 approval May 14 of the $127.7 million budget, the three Democrats opposing the spending plan.

The council vote came after the three Democrats raised a number of motions to cut the budget further in various areas, and even in one case to increase money for road maintenance. However, they were repeatedly voted down by the majority Republicans.

Council Republicans accused the Democrats of trying to micromanage Brumback. The 2012-13 budget was the first one crafted by Brumback, who has served as town manager for a little over a year.

UK lawmakers kick up a stink over smelly restrooms

(AP) ? British lawmakers are kicking up a stink about the odor and lack of cleanliness inside restrooms at the House of Commons.

In an internal survey of legislators and their staff published Friday, they also complained about the standards, service and range of food at Parliament's restaurants and cafes.

Some legislators grumbled that cuisine available at facilities inside the Palace of Westminster, home to both the House of Commons and the House of Lords, was too elaborate.

Many requested a return to traditional British dishes.

About one third of lawmakers, and a quarter of their staff, said the famous building had a problem with dirty, smelly bathrooms.

A total of 177 legislators and 961 staff were questioned for the House of Commons study.

BOSTON (AP) - Max Scherzer and Delmon Young helped the Detroit Tigers head home on a positive note.

Scherzer pitched into the seventh inning, Young homered and the Tigers beat the Boston Red Sox 7-3 on Thursday night to avoid a four-game series sweep.

Detroit went 10-14 during a grueling stretch of 19 of 24 on the road and return home to open a three-game series against the New York Yankees on Friday night.

"Going on the road sometimes is a good thing for the bonding aspect, but it will be nice to get back to Comerica (Park)" Scherzer said. "We didn't want to get swept."

Scherzer (5-3) retired nine consecutive batters before Nick Punto led off the seventh with a walk, forcing the right-hander from the game after 117 pitches. He allowed three runs and seven hits in his third consecutive victory, closing out a strong May.

"We just let him off the hook," Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine said. "Heck, we had his pitch count up in the 80s after four innings and we were having good at-bats. Just kind of let it slip away."

Young hit a solo drive in the eighth to make it 5-3, then added a run-scoring single in the ninth.

Jarrod Saltalamacchia hit his 10th homer for Boston, which was seeking its first four-game sweep against the Tigers since 2004. Josh Beckett (4-4) allowed four runs and a season-high 10 hits in seven innings.

The Red Sox opened May with eight losses in nine games to drop to 12-19 on the year. But they closed out the month with a 14-6 run to pull within three of the division lead.

Young and Quintin Berry each had three hits for Detroit, which finished with 14 overall. Berry also scored two runs and stole two bases.

"I got back to playing my game tonight on the bases," Berry said.

Saltalamacchia connected in the second inning, and Scott Podsednik doubled in Ryan Sweeney to make it 2-0. Detroit responded with three runs in the third, capped by Prince Fielder's two-out RBI single.

Saltalamacchia tied it with a two-out RBI single in bottom half. But the Tigers grabbed the lead for good when Miguel Cabrera singled in Berry in the fifth.

Beckett had allowed three runs in 21 2-3 innings over his previous three starts, but he struggled once again with the Tigers. He gave up seven runs, including five home runs, in 4 2-3 innings on opening day in Detroit.

"I made some pitches when I needed to and I didn't make some other ones, Beckett said. "We kind of talk about this a lot, you're going to have five pitches in a game that you have to make, and I think I made three of them today. The other two it cost me three runs in one inning."

The burly Fielder also tripled in Cabrera in the ninth.

The Tigers threatened to score in the second inning after Young singled and Alex Avila followed with a double, but Sweeney caught Jhonny Peralta's fly ball to right and doubled up Young trying to score from third.

You want it perfect ? but does the boss? ? Business Management ...

Phil, an administrative assistant, re??cently lamented that his efforts to improve his boss?s communication were going unheeded.

?When I try to make grammatical, punctuation or spelling corrections to his written communication, he invariably resists my efforts and argues every point,? says Phil. ?How do I make him see that I?m right, without sounding like a ?difficult employee???

Accuracy, on every front, is one of an administrative assistant?s most valuable attributes. For Phil, in particular, it?s difficult not to notice the grammatical errors. And because he notices them, he feels compelled to point them out.

But perhaps it?s not what Phil?s boss wants from Phil. When someone hands you his work to look over, first determine what he wants in return.

???Ask, ?What would you like for me to look out for?? Give examples. ?Would you like for me to correct any misspellings or grammatical errors? Would you like for me to check the tone or meaning??

???Repeat back what you heard. Example: ?So, you?d like for me to edit any grammatical or spelling errors I spot. Is that right??

???Consider how to deliver feedback. Is your boss a busy person who prefers to communicate by email? Is what you?re saying likely to spur a discussion, which doesn?t lend itself to email?

If your boss doesn?t value the fact that you can catch even the smallest grammatical slip, then try to keep perfectionism at bay.

Some bosses appreciate perfectionism, such as Susan Credle, chief creative officer of Leo Burnett USA. But even Credle recognizes that perfectionism can work against an employee.

She tells The New York Times, ?I love perfectionists. I?ll say to them: ?Come sit with me and let?s talk about what you?re pushing up against.?And is this the right thing to focus on? And let?s be sincere about it, because you are not going to survive in this industry if you can?t let some of these things go.??
