UNC leads Boston College 40-27 at halftime

CHAPEL HILL ? Third-ranked North Carolina leads Boston College 40-27 at halftime here at the Smith Center. Some thoughts and observations from the first half:

--Kind of a sluggish first half for the Tar Heels. They?re shooting 48.4 percent for some reason it doesn?t seem like it. It was a 15-14 game well into the half before UNC went on a 10-0 run to open things up a bit. Still, each time that it seems like UNC is about to blow the game wide open, the Eagles hang around.

--Harrison Barnes is playing inspired, though. He has 12 points on the half on 5-of-7 shooting, including an authoritative one-handed dunk that brought the crowd to its feet at one point.

--Boston College has a lot of players who probably don?t really belong in the ACC, but you have to credit the Eagles: They?re hanging around. Matt Humphrey is having a nice game. He leads BC with 9 points off the bench.

--The 7-foot- Boston College center Dennis Clifford is making things interesting ? at least more interesting than in some other games this season ? on the interior for UNC. He has altered a few shots and has 5 points at halftime.

--New football coach Larry Fedora received one of the loudest ovations of the half from the Smith Center crowd. He was introduced during a timeout during the first half and he spoke at midcourt for a couple of minutes. He pleaded the crowd to sell out Kenan Stadium next season and closed his talk by saying, ?I am Larry Fedora. And I?m a Tar Heel.?

--UNC honored former athletic director Dick Baddour at halftime. Roy Williams spoke. When chancellor Holden Thorp was introduced, he was booed.

That?s about all. See you after the game.?
