'Doctor shopping' for prescription medicines that many American abuse will become more difficult thanks to the Tennessee Prescription Safety Act of 2012.
The new law requires all prescribers and dispensers in the state to register with Tennessee's Controlled Substance Monitoring Database.
The law demands that prescribers must check the database for a patients controlled substance history before prescribing an opioid or a benzodiazepine, the most commonly abused prescription drugs.
Every Tennessee MD, nurse practitioner, dentist, psychiatrist and pharmacist needs to learn the legal ramifications of the new law and how to integrate it into their practice.
The Church Health Center-Wellness Center at 1115 Union Ave. will host an informational seminar on Friday, January 18, 2013 from 3:30 to 5:30 in the afternoon. Dr. Andrew Holt, Executive Director of the Tennessee Board of Pharmacy, will offer an overview of the Drug Safety Act and answer questions with a panel of legal and medical professionals.
Opening remarks will be made by Doug Varney, Commissioner, Tennessee Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services.
